Desperate Search After Passenger Ferry Sinks in Vanuatu

A passenger ferry sank between two islands in Vanuatu, triggering an urgent search-and-rescue operation in the South Pacific. The MV Matui sank while traveling between Ambae and Santo islands, carrying 47 individuals on board.

Vanuatu’s Ministry of the Prime Minister reported one fatality and over 30 people missing. Searchers have rescued 15 survivors and recovered one body. Efforts are shifting from open waters to Vanuatu’s southeastern coastline, where currents might have carried survivors, explained Matai Seremaiah, a Luganville Parliament member.

The Ministry extended condolences to affected families and stated, “To the survivors, we pray for your strength and recovery.” The tragedy might have stemmed from disregarded marine warnings and possible ferry overloading.

Survival Factors

Retired Coast Guard Capt. Aaron Davenport noted several survival factors for the missing, such as water temperature, injuries, and access to lifesaving equipment. He cautioned that survival chances diminish over time due to exposure and lack of food and water.

Investigation Announced

The Ministry emphasized the importance of vessel safety regulations, asserting, “Ship owners must ensure their vessels are seaworthy and equipped with necessary safety gear.” A full investigation has been launched to prevent future incidents.

Fox News Digital previously reported a similar tragedy on Aug. 30 when the Filo Jet catamaran capsized off northern Cyprus, resulting in 14 deaths and 14 missing, while 239 people survived. Investigations into what caused the vessel to sink are ongoing.
