Bob Mackie, a renowned fashion and costume designer, passed away on Monday at the age of 87. A statement on his official Instagram expressed, ‘With a heavy heart, we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today. He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do.’ It concluded by noting that his ‘genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever.’
Mackie was celebrated for his dazzling and theatrical creations that defined the style of icons such as Cher, Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, and Tina Turner. His career gained momentum when he started designing for Mitzi Gaynor and later created costumes for ‘The Carol Burnett Show,’ where he remained for its entire 11-season run.
One of his most famous creations was Cher’s feathered ensemble at the 1986 Academy Awards. Mackie’s work garnered him nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award for ‘The Cher Show,’ and three Academy Award nominations. He once mentioned that Cher’s bold fashion choices, like the halter dress, influenced global fashion trends.
Mackie’s designs, often featuring sequins, feathers, beads, and a sense of showmanship, made him a prominent figure in Hollywood costume design. His work continues to influence as new generations of stars embrace his archival pieces. Sabrina Carpenter, for instance, has often worn Mackie’s vintage designs, including a silver-and-white gown at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards originally made for Madonna in 1991.
Before his passing, Mackie observed that artists such as Carpenter, Miley Cyrus, and Zendaya have shown a renewed interest in his timeless creations.
