In the world of hockey, size often plays a crucial role. Most players would avoid a confrontation with Alexander Karmanov, a 7-foot-1 and 280-pound player. Yet, Liam Lefebvre isn’t one to shy away from a challenge.
The Los Angeles Kings prospect faced off with San Jose Sharks prospect Karmanov during the 2026 Rookie Faceoff. Karmanov, noted as the tallest player ever drafted in the NHL, became a center of attention on Saturday night.
The situation escalated in the third period of San Jose’s triumph over the Kings, which ended in an 8-1 score. Karmanov delivered a hard hit on Kings defenseman Jakub Dvorak in the neutral zone. Dvorak suffered an upper-body injury and remained on the ice, prompting several Kings players, including Lefebvre, to confront Karmanov.
Standing at 6-foot-3, Lefebvre is typically considered tall. However, against Karmanov’s towering figure, he appeared small, almost like a younger sibling.
“I asked the guy if he wanted to go,” Karmanov explained after the fight. “Yeah, we went.”
The gloves came off, and Karmanov used his longer reach, eventually sending Lefebvre to the ice. Afterward, Karmanov skated to the penalty box, engaging the crowd to cheer louder.
Drafted 201st overall, Karmanov is celebrated as the first Moldovan-born defenseman of such a stature ever selected into the league. His presence marks a significant moment in NHL history.
Despite the confrontation, the spectacle highlights the intensity and unpredictability inherent in hockey. Both players demonstrated the passion and resolve that drive them.
