Alison Lee, a prominent figure in professional golf, resumed her career at the 2026 LPGA Tour while on maternity leave following the birth of her son. At 31, Lee’s participation on the U.S. Solheim Cup team was noteworthy. Her performance against Europe in the Netherlands captivated audiences.
During the biennial Solheim Cup, Lee played in three of the first four sessions. She achieved victories in two foursome matches and one fourball match within the first two days. As the second American to start the singles session on Sunday, Lee faced challenges that demonstrated resilience.
Initially, Lee struggled, playing her first 11 holes at 1-over par and trailing 4-down against Europe’s Esther Henseleit at Bernardus Golf. No competitor had previously overturned such a deficit in the 36-year history of the event. Despite the odds, Lee exhibited remarkable form, altering history.
Her comeback was facilitated by Henseleit’s final seven holes played at 2-over. Yet, Lee needed to deliver, which she did effectively. Playing the last seven holes at 4-under enabled her to not only tie the match but secure a full point for Team USA with two birdies in her final three holes.
Lee made history as the first player to qualify for the U.S. team automatically after childbirth since Juli Inkster in 2011. After returning from maternity leave in mid-April, Lee had limited time to accrue points. Her performance at twelve LPGA Tour events, including three top-10 finishes and a T-5 at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, was impressive.
Lee’s Sunday victory was among few American successes during the day, as Team Europe claimed ultimate victory, aided by England’s Lottie Woad defeating Auston Kim. Lee’s 2024 Solheim Cup experience included pregnancy, known only to select individuals, and contributing a point for an American victory.
Suzann Pettersen was previously the latest mother to compete at the event in 2019, contributing a dramatic cup win for Europe before retiring.
