For the first time in four years, Venus and Serena Williams reunited on the US Open court in Queens last Friday night. Their much-anticipated return followed an earlier plan to team up at Wimbledon, postponed due to Serena’s injury. At 44, Serena is making a comeback after a break from the sport.
The sisters received a warm welcome as they stepped onto Arthur Ashe Stadium’s court. Serena’s jacket highlighted her past US Open victories, noting the doubles titles she and Venus claimed in 1999 and 2009. Their rivals were Chan Hao-ching of Taiwan and Australia’s Maya Joint, whose age was just two when the Williamses secured their 2009 title.
The opening set saw competitive exchanges, with Chan and Joint taking the lead to win 6-3. In the second set, the Williams sisters showed resilience, forcing a tie-breaker. Although Chan and Joint pushed back, the sisters clinched the set, keeping the match alive. The crowd, overwhelmingly supportive of the Williamses, erupted with each point they scored.
The decisive tie-breaker in the final set was intense. The Williamses initially took a five-point lead, but Chan and Joint countered, eventually securing victory after more than three hours of play. The final thrilling score was 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(10).
This exhilarating match affirmed the legendary status of Venus and Serena Williams in the sport, demonstrating their enduring prowess. Although they didn’t win, their presence on the court remains formidable.
