Recent archaeological work at a pasta factory in Gragnano, Italy led to the unexpected discovery of a 2,600-year-old necropolis. Located near Naples, this ancient site was found on the grounds of the Pasta Garofalo factory. The excavation took place between 2025 and 2026, preceding an expansion of the factory’s production facility. Findings from the site were announced by the company in July.
This necropolis, dating back to the first half of the sixth century B.C., originates from the Archaic period of Mediterranean history, long before the emergence of the Roman Empire. Images from the dig reveal rows of stone burial chambers, with human remains, pottery, and artifacts on display.
“The site contained rarely preserved materials such as textiles, wooden objects, and woven baskets. These findings enhance our knowledge of funerary practices, social structures, and daily life during the Archaic period,” stated officials.
The grave goods included notable items like Egyptian scarabs, animal-shaped amber ornaments, and Etruscan-origin silver and bronze artifacts. Officials highlighted that these discoveries showcase the importance of Gragnano’s ancient territory within Mediterranean trade networks, connecting Greek, Egyptian, and Etruscan civilizations.
Pasta Garofalo emphasized the significance of the discovery. Having deep roots in Gragnano and the pasta-making tradition, the company celebrated this new chapter in its history.
“Our long-standing connection to Gragnano enriches our cultural and manufacturing heritage,” said Massimo Menna, CEO of Pasta Garofalo.
Researchers are continuing their study of osteological remains to gain insights into the diet, movement, and living conditions of the ancient community in this region.
This discovery adds to several significant necropolis-related finds in Italy over recent years. Earlier this year, an ancient sanctuary was uncovered in northern Italy during highway construction. In 2025, archaeologists found an almost 3,000-year-old necropolis in Trento, dated to the Iron Age.
