Chicago Misses Out on 2028 Democratic National Convention

The Democratic National Convention will not return to Chicago in 2028 despite high hopes. The Democratic National Committee announced early Thursday that it had narrowed the list of potential host cities for the party’s August convention to Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia. Both Atlanta and Chicago, the host for the 2024 convention, were eliminated.

The decision followed soon after the announcement that Illinois would not hold early Democratic presidential primaries in 2028. Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Democratic Party pushed for an early primary, arguing the state’s demographics reflect the nation.

This double blow could impact Pritzker, who is seeking a third term in November. Hosting the convention and having an early primary would have aided his potential 2028 presidential bid. Pritzker and his wife contributed $5.6 million to the 2024 convention, making up nearly 6% of the $97 million raised by the host committee. He had also been the largest individual donor for the 2016 convention in Philadelphia.

Despite the setback, Pritzker’s campaign and those supporting Chicago’s bid were silent on the disqualification news. A spokesperson for the Democratic National Convention leadership offered no immediate comment on the selection process. However, a social media post from DNC Chair Ken Martin acknowledged the strength of all the cities’ bids and looked forward to working with the selected finalists.

“Each city presented strong bids to host an inspiring celebration of our party’s future nominee and a critical step on our path to retaking the White House,” Martin stated.

There remains hope for 2032, as Chicago has bid for the subsequent party gathering. Emily Soong of the Chicago 2028 Bid Committee reaffirmed the city’s commitment to hosting top-notch conventions.

Mayor Brandon Johnson appreciated the consideration and celebrated the success of the 2024 convention, expressing optimism for future events. Alderman Walter “Red” Burnett was not surprised by the decision, acknowledging the challenges of hosting back-to-back conventions. Past conventions have been held at Chicago Stadium, the International Amphitheatre, and the United Center.

Along with historical significance, Chicago’s previous experiences in hosting conventions showcase its capability to manage significant events. Delegates celebrated a successful 2024 convention, and the city remains a contender for future events.
