The Detroit Lions entered the 2025 season with high hopes of competing for a Super Bowl title. Despite their ambitions, the team concluded the regular season with a 9-8 record, just missing the playoff cut. As the previous NFC North champions of 2023-2024, the Lions found themselves short of their goals.
Dan Campbell, the Lions’ head coach, remains optimistic about his team’s prospects. He asserts that their Super Bowl window is still open, given the current roster. Campbell expressed, via Eric Woodyard of ESPN, that the primary objective was making the playoffs and focusing on matchups and opponents.
“Our window is not closed. It’s not closed,” Campbell stated. “That was the whole reason why we did this. We fell short last year. But needed to get in [the playoffs], and now it’s about the matchups, where you’re playing and who you’re playing.”
Campbell emphasized the importance of maintaining a competitive unit rather than relying too heavily on one player. He highlighted the risks associated with focusing on a single athlete, such as potential injuries and lack of depth, which could compromise the team’s overall performance. Instead, he advocates for building a robust team capable of competing annually and adapting in crucial moments.
“We want to be able to do that every year, and sometimes, I’m just saying is what happens is, you want to go all-in for one player, well how do you know that one player doesn’t get hurt? Or how do you know the three players behind him don’t get hurt and now you’ve got no depth. Whereas, let’s just get a unit together that we feel like can compete every year and then it’s about in that moment, we’re making those plays and finding a way to win that game.”
The Lions are set to kick off their 2026 regular season with a Week 1 game against the New Orleans Saints on September 13. The team aims to start strong as they look forward to another chance to chase their Super Bowl dreams.
