Ilja Dragunov Departs WWE After Successful Career

Departure from WWE

Ilja Dragunov, known for his impressive reigns as WWE United States Champion, NXT Champion, and NXT UK Champion, has left the company. His profile was moved to WWE’s alumni section, signaling the end of his contract, as reported by PW Insider.

Career Highlights

Dragunov, hailed as one of the top professional wrestlers in the industry, joined WWE in February 2019. Before his WWE tenure, he made a name for himself in Progress Wrestling and various European promotions. His fierce and resilient style quickly set him apart, leading to his rise as NXT UK Champion.

Challenges and Triumphs

Despite a leg injury during his NXT UK stint, Dragunov returned to action in September 2022 on the NXT brand. He faced several formidable opponents like Bron Breakker, JD McDonagh, Wes Lee, and Carmelo Hayes. His prowess was undeniable, yet championship victories eluded him until he defeated Hayes in September 2023 to clinch the NXT Championship.

Transitions and Setbacks

Dragunov’s NXT Championship reign concluded in April 2024 against Trick Williams. His promotion to the Raw brand was marred by a torn ACL, sideling him for a year. Upon recovery, he entered the WWE United States Championship race, defeating Sami Zayn for the title in October 2025. He defended his title successfully multiple times before losing it to Hayes.

Final WWE Appearances

Earlier this year, Dragunov was a participant in the Royal Rumble. His final television appearance for WWE occurred during the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal on “Friday Night SmackDown,” leading up to WrestleMania 42.
