Islam Makhachev Prepares for Next UFC Challenge Against Carlos Prates

Islam Makhachev defended his UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 330 in Philadelphia, emerging victorious against Ian Machado Garry with a unanimous decision. Judges scored the fight 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 in favor of Makhachev.

Attention quickly turned to Makhachev’s next opponent. Carlos Prates, who attended the event, is positioned as a likely challenger. Prates, through a video released online post-fight, promised Makhachev a shake-up.

“I will knock you out, bro. I will knock you out. I will bring that belt to Brazil. The first welterweight champion from Brazil,” Prates stated.

Prates has built a strong resume with a three-fight win streak, including a third-round TKO victory over Jack Della Maddalena at UFC Fight Night in Perth, Australia. His last loss was against Machado Garry via unanimous decision in April. Despite this setback, Prates (24-7-0) leads the Meta UFC Rankings among welterweights, marking him as the clear contender for Makhachev’s next challenger. His 19 career knockouts speak to his striking capabilities.

Yet, there are doubts surrounding Prates’ inability to match Makhachev in wrestling. Makhachev, noted for his grappling finesse and multiple submission victories, might exploit Prates in a ground fight.

Makhachev, reflecting on his upcoming matchup, expressed thoughts on Prates deserving the championship shot, acknowledging Prates’ active competition status compared to others.

“Honestly, if you ask me today, Shavkat is not fighting; Prates still fighting, still active, and maybe Prates. Because Morales also is good, but I don’t know last time, I don’t remember when he fight. If you ask who is more deserving, I think Carlos Prates,” he remarked.

Makhachev, 34, prefers to fight soon, considering his age. This possibility aligns with Prates challenging him if official arrangements are confirmed.

Makhachev has also shared his critique of Ian Machado Garry post-UFC 330. More insights into UFC and MMA are available on Newsweek Sports.
