Valparaiso will showcase four new murals during this year’s Mural Walk, offering an interactive art experience for visitors. The event allows attendees to leave their mark on the artworks, fostering community spirit. Valparaiso Creative Council Executive Director Jessica Corral expressed excitement about the event, especially after recent storms disrupted life for many. “This festival gives everyone something enjoyable to look forward to,” she said.
Sophie Groenstein’s mural “Forged to Flourish,” illustrating the role of women in industry in Northwest Indiana, will be among the additions displayed. The Mural Walk will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. across different sites, including the city’s longest and tallest murals.
Artist Felix Maldonado from Hammond will paint a massive mural on a silo at Smith Ready Mix, located at 251 Brown St. Corral lauded his remarkable design and highlighted that Smith Ready Mix is covering expenses beyond the provided stipend. “Felix’s work is a must-see,” she noted.
A mural by Katie Lukes of Chicago is planned for the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce building at 162 W. Lincolnway. Although the installation faces a delay due to weather, the artist will paint panels during the event, which will later be installed at Front Porch Music. Katie’s art is noted for its playful, graphic style, allowing her to narrate stories using bold colors.
At the Valpo Creates Center, artist Cassi Graber will engage the community in creating a mural, which will later be installed at Central Park Plaza. Attendees are encouraged to participate, aiming to involve at least 2,000 contributors. This mural will consist of three panels, totaling 8 feet by 12 feet, and will include various materials and textures.
The Mural Walk features a map indicating locations of 13 existing murals and offers art activities, music, and “make it and take it” sessions. “It’s like a mini pop-up party at multiple locations,” Corral explained. Festival-goers can check in at designated spots for maps and the first 500 attendees will receive tote bags with a coloring book and scavenger hunt checklist.
Additionally, several downtown locations will exhibit works by artists such as Melissa Griffin and Wes Thorn. Expanded hours until 3 p.m. offer more time for attendees to explore and enjoy a meal at the event. The rain date is scheduled for August 29.
This free Valparaiso Creative Council event offers a chance for community bonding and donations made to the council will be matched by the Lilly Endowment within a 90-day challenge. Plans are underway for a Popcorn Festival fundraiser at Journeyman Distillery.
