Jeffries Distances from Medicare for All and DSA Agenda

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, has expressed his opposition to Medicare for All and the Democratic Socialists of America’s (DSA) agenda. He emphasized that Democrats should focus on affordability as they work to regain control of the House in the upcoming November elections. His remarks came after a series of progressive primary victories.

During an appearance on “Meet the Press,” host Kristen Welker asked Jeffries directly about his stance on Medicare for All. Jeffries stated, “I haven’t cosponsored the Medicare for All legislation that has been introduced over the last several years.” He also mentioned the need to address the current state of the healthcare system and to create a more affordable option for all Americans.

While acknowledging his role as a Democratic leader in the House, Jeffries reiterated that Medicare for All is not legislation he supports. Instead, he wants to find ways to make healthcare accessible and affordable for every American.

Medicare for All and Jeffries’ History

Records from Congress indicate Jeffries co-sponsored the Medicare for All Act of 2019 and later the 2021 version. However, when Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Debbie Dingell introduced H.R. 3069 in April 2025, Jeffries was not among the 102 House cosponsors. The NYC DSA Healthcare Working Group noted that their long-term organizing campaign contributed to Jeffries’ 2019 support. Despite this, he also endorsed Medicare X, a bill proposing a public option.

The DSA’s “Workers Deserve More!” program outlines goals like universal healthcare for individuals, abolishing ICE and the Senate, and significantly altering the U.S. political system. Rep. Ro Khanna from California disagreed with Jeffries, calling for Medicare for All as a top priority.

Democratic Party Dynamics

When asked about democratic socialists’ place within the Democratic Party, Jeffries voiced his disapproval of the DSA agenda while accepting the presence of diverse candidates within the party’s tent. “There will be progressives. There will be New Dems. There will be Blue Dogs,” Jeffries noted.

So far, seven incumbent House Democrats have lost their primaries, including those supported by Jeffries. These losses occurred to candidates backed by or affiliated with the DSA. In response to this, other prominent figures in the party, such as Ro Khanna, continue to champion Medicare for All.

Criticism and Analysis

Former host Mehdi Hasan criticized Jeffries’ position, suggesting that Jeffries is out of touch with the popular support for Medicare for All among Democrats nationwide. Furthermore, Ro Khanna highlighted a Yale study suggesting a single-payer system could reduce annual health costs significantly.
