Police arrested 15 individuals and impounded seven vehicles following a street takeover that involved reckless driving on a Long Island roadway early Saturday. Authorities reported that the Suffolk County Police Department’s Street Takeover Task Force detected the planned gathering through intelligence gathering methods and social media monitoring.
The group behind the street takeover planned the event in Suffolk County, an area that spans approximately 1,000 square miles covering the eastern portion of Long Island. According to police, the group moved between various locations throughout Friday night, August 14.
Officers worked to break up initial gatherings near Commack Road and Sunrise Highway in Islip and later near Route 112 and Main Street in Patchogue. At approximately 12:50 a.m. Saturday, police finally intercepted the crowd on Woodside Avenue and Sawgrass Drive in Medford. At this location, numerous vehicles had effectively shut down the road with reckless driving and stunts, including burnouts and donuts.
Members of the Street Takeover Task Force arrested 15 people, impounded seven vehicles, and issued multiple traffic tickets. Those arrested hailed from various communities across Long Island and New York City. Fourteen of the 15 individuals faced charges for participating in and spectating an unlawful speed contest.
This crackdown follows a similar incident weeks earlier, where a massive street takeover shook Suffolk County. In that event, around 200 ATVs, dirt bikes, and motorcycles filled the roads in Hauppauge and Brentwood. Police arrested three people and impounded ten vehicles during the operation.
The Suffolk County Police Department has been actively addressing these street takeover issues to maintain safety and order. The department aims to prevent future incidents through ongoing monitoring and intervention strategies.
