Trump’s Net Approval Drops as Economic Concerns Rise Among Republicans

Economic Approval Challenges

President Donald Trump’s net approval rating among Republicans decreased by 8 percentage points within a month, as reported by a Financial Times/Focaldata survey. Economic dissatisfaction and rising living costs are key contributors to this trend.

According to the survey, over 53% of registered voters feel financially worse off since Trump’s return to the White House in January 2025. Notably, 57% of independents and about 25% of Republicans share this sentiment.

Upcoming Midterm Elections

These findings emerge ahead of the midterm elections, where Republicans aim to maintain their hold on Congress while the White House promotes Trump’s economic achievements.

The survey carried out from August 7-10 among 1,913 registered voters shows a 55% disapproval rating of Trump’s presidency. Trump’s net approval rating among Republicans fell by 8 percentage points from last month.

Economic Concerns

Economic issues remain prominent among voters with Republicans facing dissatisfaction about inflation, household costs, and economic conditions. A Pew Research Center survey noted increased unease among Republicans regarding economic policy. In July, 28% said Trump’s policies worsened economic conditions, up from 18% in January.

A YouGov/Economist survey from July 31 to August 3 shows only 30% approved of Trump’s economic handling, with 65% expressing disapproval.

Inflation and Cost of Living

The Financial Times/Focaldata poll highlights concerns among 64% of registered voters who disapprove of Trump’s approach to inflation and living costs. This includes nearly 70% of independents and about one-third of Republicans.

Nearly two-thirds believe the economy is moving in the wrong direction, while only about one-quarter see it heading correctly.

Republican Criticism

Nebraska Republican Representative Don Bacon, speaking on CBS News’ Face the Nation, asserted that Trump struggles to communicate an understanding of voters’ economic challenges. Bacon points out Trump’s lack of effective communication regarding affordability issues and criticizes tariff policies that contribute to higher consumer prices.

He noted that tariffs are essentially taxes on consumers, which elevate prices.

Fuel Costs Argument

Amid rising fuel costs related to the Iran conflict, Trump has asked voters to accept higher gasoline prices as part of efforts to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

White House Response

White House spokesman Kush Desai defended the administration’s record, highlighting achievements in affordability through drug price reduction, reshoring jobs, and tax cuts.

Desai emphasized that many economic issues were inherited from former President Joe Biden.

Midterm Prospects

The survey also shows Democrats leading with 44% compared to 39% for Republicans when choosing which party to support in November.

Government data indicates inflation at 3.4% in July, alongside declining consumer sentiment and real wages.

With economic concerns and inflation as top voter issues, Republicans are challenged to affirm Trump’s record while addressing voter concerns about affordability.
