Investigative Actions by Chicago Authorities
The Chicago Police Department (CPD) and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) have initiated investigations following a viral video that emerged earlier this week. The video purportedly shows an off-duty Chicago Police Department sergeant issuing threats to teenagers and their families on the Southwest Side.
Representatives from both COPA and CPD have confirmed that inquiries were launched after a video circulated on social media, depicting a muscular, middle-aged man confronting a small group of teens aggressively. The CPD’s Bureau of Internal Affairs, along with COPA, decided to open investigations into this profane and threatening incident, which involved the off-duty sergeant, Jeremy Sikorski.
According to the CPD, Sergeant Sikorski has been stripped of his police powers following the incident.
Details of the Incident
In the video shared by CWBChicago, the man, identified as Sergeants Jeremy Sikorski, demands to know if the teenagers were picking on younger children. The teens deny these accusations, explaining they were merely trying to avoid younger kids due to crude remarks directed at teen girls.
Sikorski then proceeds with a torrent of vulgar language, threatening one of the teen boys by promising violence against them and their parents. His threats included statements like, “I’ll knock your [expletive] ass out,” and “Get your [expletive] parents over here.” A woman standing nearby pleads with him to stop, but Sikorski continues to escalate the situation.
The confrontation escalates when Sikorski walks past a teen girl recording the incident; her phone is knocked to the ground, eliciting her tears and complaint of pain.
Repercussions and Past Allegations
A spokesperson for CPD said that Sergeant Sikorski has been relieved of his police powers and reassigned to the Alternate Response Section as a result of the internal investigation initiated by the CPD’s Bureau of Internal Affairs. COPA has also confirmed that an independent probe is underway.
Sikorski has not responded to requests for comment regarding the events. Documents from the city’s Office of Inspector General reveal that Sikorski has faced 22 previous allegations of misconduct throughout his career, two of which were sustained.
