A tragic event unfolded in Apopka, Florida, when a man was shot after intervening in a roadside conflict between a couple following a car accident. The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Raul Lionel Vazquez, who has been charged with the second-degree murder of 56-year-old Daryl Alexander Hill, as confirmed by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the scene at 8:27 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, where they found Hill lying face down with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after at 9:20 a.m.
According to a GoFundMe page set up by a friend of Hill’s wife, Suzy Hill, Hill is remembered for his “contagious personality” and ability to spread laughter and joy. Hill leaves behind a wife and a 10-year-old daughter.
The incident began when witnesses saw Vazquez and a woman, Kaidy Honaker, in a heated argument inside a white Chevy Silverado that crashed into a black Lexus. The couple continued to argue on the sidewalk. Hill, who was riding his bicycle nearby, became involved in the altercation.
Witnesses reported that Hill and Vazquez ended up in a physical struggle in the bushes, with Honaker joining the fight. Hill attempted to run away, shouting “help” with his hands raised.
Vazquez then retrieved a shotgun from his vehicle and fired at Hill, hitting him. Vazquez later gave “varied accounts” of the event but claimed Hill was attacking him.
At the time, Vazquez was out on bond related to a separate aggravated assault case involving a deadly weapon. Earlier, he had been involved in an incident where someone was threatened with a gun. He had pleaded not guilty and was granted a $5,000 bond.
Authorities arrested Vazquez without an attorney on record, and the public defender’s office has been contacted. The Apopka Police Department, involved in the preceding cases, noted that bond decisions are made by the state attorney. The state attorney’s office has yet to comment on Vazquez’s case. Additionally, Vazquez was previously arrested for a domestic violence incident in March 2025 but pleaded not guilty, and his bond was discharged.
