Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan Democratic Senate candidate, recently increased tensions with Republican contender Mike Rogers. El-Sayed, who is 41, challenged Rogers, a former FBI agent aged 63, to a tackle football game after accusing him of avoiding a debate.
“Since you’re too afraid to debate me, how about you ‘hold me accountable’ on a football field instead,” El-Sayed posted online, suggesting a game without pads. He emphasized his fondness for football in the offer.
This challenge arises as Rogers attempts to turn El-Sayed’s past criticisms of football culture into a campaign issue. El-Sayed responded by publicly embracing sports and fitness as part of his appeal to male voters. The interaction between the two quickly turned personal, with Rogers’ campaign dismissing El-Sayed jokingly based on his height.
Rogers has been targeting El-Sayed’s prior comments, including those critical of football and other American pastimes. El-Sayed was previously known to express concerns about toxic masculinity within sports culture. Despite this, he played high school football, even captaining his team, and regards sports as crucial to his identity.
In an October 2021 essay, El-Sayed noted, “The toxic masculinity at the heart of America’s most popular sport — and men’s sports culture more generally — goes way deeper than a few emails or a Jay-Z turnaround.”
Rogers’ campaign responded to El-Sayed’s online challenge with dismissive humor, referencing El-Sayed’s height. On social media, Rogers’ team posted a GIF of Will Ferrell calling El-Sayed “an angry elf,” playfully turning the height comment into a meme.
El-Sayed’s physical stature was detailed as 5 feet, 9 inches during his University of Michigan lacrosse career, although previous reports noted him as 5 feet, 8 inches.
