In Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, State Rep. Francesca Hong’s attempt to win the nomination ended in disappointment. Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley narrowly defeated her, although earlier polls indicated Hong held a large lead.
The outcome reflects ongoing discussions within the Democratic Party about supporting progressive candidates versus more established figures. Concerns about Hong’s “electability” influenced many voters, who ultimately backed Crowley.
Linda Pullman, a resident of Madison, expressed doubts in an interview, citing the need to support a candidate more likely to win in November. Elise, a college student from Madison, shared her disappointment over Hong’s loss.
Crowley’s campaign gained traction with support from Wisconsin’s retiring Democratic Governor, Tony Evers. Evers warned that Hong’s progressive views could jeopardize the party’s chances in the upcoming general election. Hong’s stances on issues like abolishing the U.S. Senate and canceling Thanksgiving left some voters wary.
Jonathan Greenberg, another Madison resident, noted how backing from Governor Evers seemed to consolidate support for Crowley at the last minute. Concerns about Hong’s ability to appeal to the state’s centrist voters further solidified Crowley’s position.
Crowley now faces Republican nominee Rep. Tom Tiffany, supported by former President Donald Trump, in November’s elections. Tiffany’s House Freedom Caucus membership makes the race one of the GOP’s top priorities for a potential statewide flip.
Voter Joshua chose Crowley, believing his chances against Tiffany were stronger. Tim, another voter, expressed uncertainty over Hong’s competitiveness in the broader election, noting concerns about her progressive platform.
Hong’s history of controversial positions, such as defunding the police, raised doubts. Natalie McFadden, a Crowley supporter, highlighted these issues, stating that swing voters might not embrace such stances.
Hong’s bid received endorsements from national progressives, such as Reps. Ilhan Omar and Ro Khanna. Yet, notably, Sen. Bernie Sanders withheld his endorsement, citing unfamiliarity with the specific race.
