The team announced Friday that Joey Bart, their newly acquired catcher, is on the 10-day injured list due to a fracture in his left hand. Bart sustained the injury when hit by a pitch during the seventh inning of Thursday’s loss to the Boston Red Sox. General Manager Chris Getz stated that Bart will be sidelined for over a month.
To address their catching needs, the White Sox recalled Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte. This move was part of four roster changes made before their series opener against the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field. In addition, pitcher Chris Murphy was placed on the 15-day IL due to a left flexor strain, and right-hander David Sandlin was called up from Charlotte.
Thursday’s game marked Bart’s third appearance for the White Sox since joining from the Atlanta Braves. Sox manager Will Venable expressed his disappointment over Bart’s injury, emphasizing the excitement Bart brought to the team. Venable remarked, “He’s excited to be here and eager to contribute as we play important games.”
GM Chris Getz acknowledged the setback, saying, “We will miss Joey. He was just getting settled in. With Edgar Quero back, we’re hoping he can step up.” The team’s catching position has seen instability throughout the season, compounded by various injuries, including Kyle Teel’s limited play.
In his last outing for the White Sox, Quero delivered a walk-off RBI single against the Yankees on July 29, 2026. Despite a challenging season, Quero spoke positively about his current form and readiness to contribute again.
Quero has been optioned to Charlotte three times this season, posting a .194/.257/.235 slash line with the Sox. He emphasized the mental strength required to navigate such shifts, expressing confidence in his abilities.
On the pitching front, Sandlin returns to the team with a 2-1 record and a 6.05 ERA over four appearances. Getz highlighted the need for diverse pitching options amidst the team’s current bullpen challenges, stating, “We need a variety of arms to tackle innings as the season progresses.”
Manager Venable indicated a flexible approach in selecting between Quero and Drew Romo, focusing on day-to-day decisions rather than fixed lineups. The White Sox aim to maintain flexibility as they manage their roster through the season.
