The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has become a focus of scrutiny amidst claims of corruption and power abuse under President Trump.
In April, Trump promised the pool’s restoration, attributing its past state to mismanagement by previous Presidents Obama and Biden. He engaged cronies for the renovation using no-bid contracts, costing $1.5 million, which involved lining the pool in American flag blue. Issues soon arose, including peeling liner, algae blooms, and dirty water, escalating repair costs to over $16 million.
As America approached its 250th July 4 celebration, Trump grew anxious about the unfinished renovation. Controversy peaked on June 19 when former Olympian David Hearn was arrested for allegedly damaging the peeling liner. Trump alleged vandalism, describing it as a “350-foot gash” made with knives but provided no supporting evidence. Repair continued secretly, with a fence erected around the pool.
Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, echoed Trump’s rhetoric, stirring further controversy. Critics view Pirro as unconstrained by ethics, evidenced by previous incendiary statements and actions as Westchester County district attorney. Her career included unsuccessful political campaigns and a contentious Fox News stint, marked by comments that led to a defamation lawsuit settlement of $787 million.
Pirro’s July 2 press conference criticized Hearn, framing his actions as “unchecked vandalism” and an affront to history. Yet, by July 31, Pirro moved to dismiss charges, citing flawed contractor work as the true cause of damage. Her office had received reports and photographs indicating poor quality materials and rushed workmanship were responsible.
Despite the dismissal, questions persist about her office’s investigative efforts and evidence presented against Hearn. Trump criticized Pirro, claiming she “choked” and compromised the case.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz offered a sharp critique of the situation, summarizing it as emblematic of Trump’s presidency.
