Scientists have successfully captured the most detailed images of the sun’s surface to date. These images showcase a peculiar and dynamic surface. Observing the sun safely requires proper eye protection. However, researchers used the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Maui, Hawaii, to observe it safely. The initial intention of capturing these images was to refine and test the telescope’s capabilities.
Upon reviewing the results, scientists discovered they had documented the sun’s bright outer shell in higher resolution than previously achieved. They noticed unusual feathery patterns rippling across the surface. Solar physicist Ruizhu Chen, from Stanford University, compared these patterns to the swirling skies in Van Gogh’s Starry Night. The images revealed ripples of instability caused by magnetized plasma moving at varying speeds. This phenomenon resembles the fluid movements observed on Earth and planets like Jupiter and Saturn; however, it has never been observed at this level on the solar surface, according to Friedrich Wöger of the National Solar Observatory.
The findings were published in the journal Nature. Understanding the sun’s internal movements is crucial for tracking coronal mass ejections, which are massive bursts of energy. These ejections can impact Earth by causing solar storms, disrupting GPS communications, and creating stunning auroras.
