A Kansas mother is recovering after a spider bite resulted in surgery, serious infections, and a prolonged hospital stay. Britagne Miller, from Goddard, Kansas, was bitten by spiders while sitting around a campfire at Cheney Lake with her family on May 28.
Several days after the incident, Miller sought medical help when a bite on her calf became swollen and painful. She described the sensation as sharp pain shooting down her leg, similar to being stabbed, according to reports from local media.
Miller was hospitalized at Wesley Hospital in Wichita on June 4. Her medical care was complicated by pre-existing health issues, including blood-clotting disorders, liver problems, and allergies to certain medications. She developed additional infections and doctors diagnosed her with end-stage liver failure, posing a life-threatening risk.
Despite her condition, Miller opted to continue treatment instead of entering hospice care, as reported by KAKE. She was released from the hospital on July 11 and is now recovering at home with support for home health care, physical therapy, and regular specialist visits. While she hopes for a liver transplant, she currently does not meet eligibility requirements for the transplant list.
The specific type of spider responsible for the bite has not been confirmed. Dr. Raymond Cloyd, a horticultural entomologist, noted that the brown recluse and black widow spiders are common in Kansas and advised precautionary measures like sealing cracks and being cautious with unused items.
Britagne Miller’s ordeal highlights ongoing challenges, but her family remains hopeful for a brighter future. The GoFundMe set up by her husband, Jake, reflects their optimism, stating their hope for her recovery and future as a mother and grandmother.
