Washington Commanders cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon has announced his retirement from the NFL at 31. The team placed him on the Reserve/Retired List and signed cornerback Fabian Moreau as his replacement.
Witherspoon practiced with the team on Monday but informed them of his decision to retire on Tuesday morning. His contract with the Commanders, signed in May, was for one year at $1.41 million. He will not play for them this fall.
College and NFL Journey
Witherspoon played college football at Colorado as a standout defensive back. In 37 games, he accumulated 71 tackles, three interceptions, 27 passes defended, one fumble recovery, and one forced fumble. During his senior year, he led Division I college football by defending 22 passes.
The San Francisco 49ers selected Witherspoon in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He played a crucial role in their secondary. Over his time with the 49ers, he started 33 of 47 games, recording 117 tackles and four interceptions, with one returned for a touchdown, and 24 passes defended.
Career Moves and Achievements
After four years with the 49ers, Witherspoon signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Before playing for them, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he spent two seasons. During his time with the Steelers, Witherspoon started seven of 13 games, achieving 35 tackles and four interceptions.
Witherspoon then signed three consecutive one-year contracts with the Los Angeles Rams. His first season with the Rams was the best of his career, as he started all 17 games and recorded 52 tackles along with three interceptions.
Throughout his career, Witherspoon started 64 of 96 games. He totaled 243 tackles, 13 interceptions, and defended 60 passes.
