Despite the intended innovation, AI-assisted staging received boos and whistles from the audience during ‘Götterdämmerung.’ Curator Marcus Lobbes faced public disapproval, yet applause was given to the singers and musicians, especially conductor Christian Thielemann.
Festival organizers stated this was the first instance of AI on stage, providing an ‘image-generating force.’ This involved singers positioned amid a dynamic visual display. The projections included elements from past ‘Ring’ cycle performances and historical images.
The eclectic collage surprised spectators, integrating images of figures like former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, the World Trade Center post-9/11, and a German reunification stamp from 1990.
The event’s website noted that each presentation would be distinct as the images continually evolve. Two more performances are expected to take place.
