A new national poll highlights a significant demand among Democrats for change, while revealing challenges for prominent progressive politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Conducted by CNN/SSRS between July 23-27, the poll shows a strong desire among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents for major shifts in party leadership and strategy. However, Ocasio-Cortez’s national favorability is low at 26 percent, with a 36 percent unfavorable rate.
The poll also reveals her favorability among younger adults, a core support group, at 28 percent for ages 18 to 34 and 30 percent for ages 35 to 49. The survey included 1,225 respondents, with a margin of error of +/-3.2 at a 95 percent confidence level.
Democratic Strategy Challenge
The findings pose a strategic quandary for the Democratic Party. While dissatisfaction with leadership is widespread, Ocasio-Cortez’s visibility does not equate to broad national appeal. She remains a leading voice among progressives and a prominent fundraiser, despite polling below the typical 40-50 percent favorability for nationally recognized politicians.
Ocasio-Cortez has dismissed any intentions to run for president in 2028, focusing instead on her role within the progressive wing. Newsweek has contacted her office and the Democratic National Committee for comment.
Seeking Direction Amidst Division
The survey notes that about a third of Democrats identify as democratic socialists, indicating strong progressive influence. Most, however, favor a change in leadership and strategy. Despite a large social media following and her fundraising prowess, Ocasio-Cortez’s favorability trails behind typical national figures with extensive recognition.
Potential Democratic Frontrunners for 2028
No major candidates have yet announced their campaigns for the 2028 Democratic presidential race. However, Vice President Kamala Harris has hinted at a potential run, highlighting her proximity and experience near the presidency. She mentioned her time near the Oval Office as crucial preparation.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has not ruled out the possibility, telling The Wall Street Journal that while he isn’t currently considering a run, it remains a potential path.
In contrast, Ocasio-Cortez has emphasized her focus on systemic change over personal political ambition, highlighting enduring issues such as healthcare and workers’ rights as her primary goals.
Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff has explicitly stated he is not considering a 2028 candidacy, staying focused on his reelection effort, which is categorized as “Lean Democratic” by the Cook Political Report.

With the presidential election still years away, Democrats must balance addressing internal calls for reform while selecting leaders who can unify a diverse electorate. The party’s direction in the coming years remains a focal point for strategists.
