The Pentagon is prioritizing increased production within the U.S. defense industrial base. This strategy focuses on preventing Chinese control over materials crucial for military operations. Ensuring reliable supply chains aligns with the administration’s approach to boost U.S. economic growth by promoting domestic manufacturing.
The order encourages partnerships with allies like the G7, ensuring production occurs within U.S. territory. A notable example is a deal between U.S. company ReconCraft and Ukraine’s Uforce to manufacture drone boats in Portland, Oregon. This agreement increases the Pentagon’s capacity for autonomous weapon systems.
In a recent test, U.S. drone boats targeted an Iranian submarine facility in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. and Ukraine will share warfighting strategies developed during Ukraine’s persistent conflict with Russia. Such technology benefits Middle Eastern operations, where advanced drone and counter-drone strategies are needed.
Similar principles apply to the semiconductor supply chain, vital for drone production. Last December, Senator Marsha Blackburn introduced the Chip EQUIP Act to eliminate vulnerabilities in semiconductor supply chains. The act prohibits companies funded by the CHIPS Act from acquiring technology from China and other adversarial countries.
Blackburn emphasized the importance of protecting semiconductor supply chains from nations like China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran. The Chip EQUIP Act ensures U.S. labs receiving CHIPS funding avoid tools manufactured in these countries.
