Ryder Williams, a 16-year-old lifeguard in Santa Cruz, California, gained recognition as a hero after saving a young boy caught in a dangerous rip tide and strong surf. The boy’s father, Sumit Rai, expressed profound gratitude for Williams’ brave actions. As a result of his courageous efforts, Williams has received an invite to the White House to receive a civilian honor.
Father’s Frightful Experience
Sumit Rai received a distressing phone call that no parent wants to hear. His 10-year-old son, Nathaniel, had been swept into the ocean at Seabright State Beach. Rai recalled his son’s words, “Dad, I drowned. I went unconscious.” Nathaniel, caught near the shoreline, was dragged approximately 15 yards into deeper waters.
According to witnesses, the rescue was more challenging than video footage revealed. Williams held onto the child steadfastly, despite the turbulent surf.
High Surf Conditions at Seabright State Beach
During the incident, Seabright State Beach was under a high surf advisory. Waves ranged from 4 to 6 feet, occasionally peaking at 10 feet. Williams, positioned at Lifeguard Tower 2, noticed Nathaniel struggling in the water about 20 yards away.
He communicated the situation via radio, left his equipment and sunglasses, and rushed to the water equipped with fins and a buoy. The dramatic rescue video captured Williams battling the rough surf while holding Nathaniel.
Overcoming the Waves
Williams explained he initially struggled to pull the boy out due to his limp state and aggressive waves. After more waves hit them, fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen joined to assist. Rai acknowledged the difficulty as Williams maneuvered Nathaniel, weighing approximately 100 pounds, through powerful waves.
“This act is remarkable,” said Rai, expressing his inability to repay such courage. Williams and Bohnen eventually brought Nathaniel to shore, assessing him for injuries.
A Father’s Gratitude
Rai, absent during the incident, anticipated reuniting with his son. “The first thing I’ll do is give him a big hug. I am relieved and thankful for Ryder’s bravery,” he said. Without Williams, Rai believes his son wouldn’t have survived.
National Attention and Recognition
The rescue garnered national attention and praise from figures including President Donald Trump. He stated that Williams deserved a White House visit and a national honor. Rai supported this recognition, expressing gratitude for Williams’ actions.
Reflecting on the broader role of lifeguards, Williams felt privileged. “I’m grateful to have safely returned the child to his family,” he stated. He praised fellow lifeguards who undertake similar rescues daily.
Over the weekend, lifeguards in California State Parks’ Santa Cruz District completed 34 rescues and engaged in over 5,000 preventative contacts along the coast.
