Ruston Kelly Resolves to Stay Sober After Near-Fatal Golf Cart Accident

Ruston Kelly made a decisive commitment to sobriety following a dangerous incident with a golf cart. The 37-year-old musician revealed that he was three days sober after struggling with relapse caused by the accident that occurred in June.

The country singer shared his journey in a heartfelt social media post, where he acknowledged the challenges faced over recent months. He displayed a Narcotics Anonymous gold token reading, “My gratitude speaks when I care and when I share with others the NA way.” This token symbolized his milestone in maintaining sobriety.

In the Instagram post, Kelly explained his past understanding of addiction. “I told myself back in 2021 that as long as I wasn’t using amphetamines that I would be on the right ‘clean’ journey for myself,” he stated. He mentioned previously being addicted only to amphetamines, dismissing alcohol and THC initially.

However, Kelly admitted to misjudging his relationship with substances. “Somewhere along the way I became obstinate in my journey, that I wasn’t an ‘addict’ in the traditional sense of the word,” he said. He emphasized believing he had control over alcohol and other substances.

Reflecting on recent events, Kelly spoke about the golf cart crash, saying he overcorrected the vehicle, resulting in a severe arm injury. “After my accident where I broke my arm in half, I was given fentanyl, morphine, ketamine, dilaudid, and oxycodone for 3 days leaving with a month-long Rx of Percocet,” he shared, pointing out how these pain medications led to dependency.

Kelly confessed his struggle with the prescription drugs, “I was chewing them in the pharmacy before I walked out the door. I was hiding how many at a time I was taking.” As a result, he experienced a resurgence of addiction feelings. “On July 26 I decided to end any chance of ruining anything good,” he declared.

Moving forward, Kelly resolved to eliminate substances from his life, including alcohol and THC, with plans to quit nicotine as well. “I am 3 days completely clean and sober again, and intend to remain this way forever, one day at a time,” he affirmed.
