Violence in New York: A 12-Year-Old Victim
The recent tragedy in the Bronx involves the shooting of a 12-year-old boy. This incident took place on Saturday, around Elliot Place in the Mount Eden area. Witnesses reported hearing five shots. A boy on a bike collapsed on the sidewalk as the shooter drove away in a Jeep. Authorities confirmed that the boy was shot in the shoulder and later died at Lincoln Hospital.
Apart from the tragic death of the child, the shooting left two others injured. A 34-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the foot, and a 25-year-old was shot in the backside. Both are expected to survive their injuries.
Mayor Mamdani’s Response
Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the incident on social media. He expressed deep sorrow for the family and loved ones of the boy. His statement highlighted the indescribable loss they are facing. Mamdani also wished for the quick recovery of the other two victims.

Mamdani’s comments reflect ongoing concerns about gun crime in New York City. The mayor has been vocal about such issues since he assumed office.
Gun Violence Statistics and Previous Incidents
From January to July, New York City saw 322 shooting incidents. There were 381 victims during this time, which is a slight decrease from the previous year.
Several past incidents have also raised alarms. On April 1, a seven-month-old baby was shot in a gang-related incident in Brooklyn. In another case, four children were among eight people shot in Coney Island on July 4. The involvement of minors in these incidents highlights the severity of gun crime in the city.
Mamdani, before taking office, had condemned similar incidents related to gun violence outside New York. Upon becoming mayor, he continued to denounce the rise of gun crime. However, he noted a decrease in overall crime rates in New York City during the first half of 2026. He emphasized the effectiveness of the city’s comprehensive public safety measures.
