Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sparked excitement with a tweet featuring his signature clock emoji. This tweet has long signaled his readiness to confront challenges and silence skeptics. This time, it followed the announcement that Mahomes is fully cleared to participate in training camp, just seven months after surgery for a torn ACL and LCL.
The two-time NFL MVP, who has also won three Super Bowls, received clearance from Dr. Dan Cooper earlier in the week. Mahomes shared, “This is just another checkpoint on the schedule. You have to continue to work. It’s not like it’s over, and I’m just gonna be able to play a game tomorrow. You gotta continue to work and get better and better and go throughout practice and prove to the coaches, prove to the doctors, and everybody that I’m the same quarterback I was before, if not better.”
When asked how he feels improved post-injury, Mahomes stated, “I feel stronger than I’ve ever felt. So now it’s just about getting that quarterback stuff down — moving in the pocket quick, making those quick moments, reacting, and doing stuff like that.” He remarked that the injury allowed him to focus on fine-tuning aspects of his play, like pocket navigation and offensive management. Mahomes added that he plans to do “everything I did before,” but with less focus on rushing, thanks to new signing Kenneth Walker III, last season’s Super Bowl MVP from the Seattle Seahawks.
Mahomes has not had the advantage of a 1,000-yard rusher during his time as Chiefs QB1. The team’s offseason strategy emphasized reducing reliance on Mahomes’ improvisational skills, shown by signing Walker and reuniting with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Despite these moves, Mahomes’ brand of magic is likely to continue. The upcoming season is crucial for the Chiefs, who missed the playoffs last year for the first time since 2014 with a 6-11 record.
