The renowned singer Chris Brown pleaded guilty to affray on Friday, following a skirmish in a London nightclub that left a music producer injured. The 37-year-old artist appeared at Southwark Crown Court, withdrawing his earlier plea against more severe charges linked to the February 2023 incident.
In exchange for Brown’s guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to drop charges of assault, attempted grievous bodily harm, and possessing an offensive weapon, specifically a bottle. Brown’s associate, Omololu Akinlolu, a vocal coach, also admitted guilt over the incident. Both men were initially scheduled for trial in October.
The altercation took place at Tape nightclub in the affluent Mayfair district. Brown had rejected accusations of attacking producer Abraham Diaw with a bottle. However, prosecutors provided surveillance footage from the club that captured the altercation in the presence of numerous witnesses.
This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,said Claire Campbell, a senior prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service.
Campbell emphasized that the Crown Prosecution Service is committed to confronting such violence, working with law enforcement and the justice system to ensure everyone is held accountable.
Following his guilty plea, Brown was granted bail again after initially securing freedom with a bond of 5 million pounds ($6.75 million) that permitted him to tour in Europe and North America last summer. The sentencing for the affray charge is set for October 26, facing a possible maximum three-year prison sentence.
Sporting a tan suit, gold-rimmed sunglasses, and a St. Louis Cardinals cap, Brown signed autographs for fans upon exiting the courthouse. Rising to fame as a teenager in 2005, Brown has earned accolades for his music, with two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album in 2011 and 2025, respectively.
