Illinois Democrats have turned down President Trump’s offer to deploy the National Guard in Chicago to address rising crime rates. Both Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson criticized Trump’s proposal. They argue Trump misunderstands local safety requirements and has previously defunded safety institutions in the city.
Reports indicate that two individuals were shot and killed on the University of Chicago campus on Thursday. The victims, a 27-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, were found in a vehicle on South Ellis Avenue near Midway Plaisance Ice Skating Rink around 5:35 p.m. Both had gunshot wounds to the head and were later pronounced dead after being transported to the university hospital.
No connections between the victims and the university have been confirmed.
Chicago Police reported recovering a firearm from the scene. Video footage shows the vehicle, which appeared damaged, had crashed during or after the shooting. The police department spokesperson stated the investigation is ongoing and details remain unconfirmed.
