The White House generated unexpected attention with an Instagram post titled “America’s Eras Tour,” inspired by Taylor Swift’s famous Eras Tour posters. This graphic, shared before Independence Day, included historical images alongside former President Donald Trump with the caption: “It’s been a long time coming,” a lyric from Swift’s tour.
This post contrasts Trump’s previous criticisms of Swift, including his 2024 statement, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” Numerous responses criticized the administration for leveraging Swift’s branding despite Trump’s earlier comments. Some commenters referenced Trump’s prior remarks about Swift, while others humorously suggested the administration had entered its “Eras” era.
The irony of the post resonates because of Trump’s history with Swift, who has publicly supported Democratic candidates in recent elections. Their relationship hasn’t always been contentious. In 2012, Trump thanked Swift for a photo, saying, “Thanks for the beautiful picture—you are fantastic!”
The tone shifted in 2018 when Swift encouraged her followers to vote against Republican Marsha Blackburn, referring to Blackburn as “Trump in a wig” in her documentary, Miss Americana. Trump responded by saying, “I like Taylor’s music about 25 percent less now, okay?”
Approaching the 2024 election, Trump took another swipe at Swift, stating: “Joe Biden didn’t do anything for Taylor, and never will…I like her boyfriend, Travis, even though he may be a Liberal, and probably can’t stand me!”
In the book Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass, Trump described Swift as “very beautiful” and questioned her liberal political views. He expressed surprise that a country star could hold such beliefs.
Swift responded critically to Trump during the 2020 protests following George Floyd’s death. She wrote that voters would remove him from office in November: “After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency…We will vote you out in November.”
When endorsing Harris and Walz in the 2024 election, Swift signed off as “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady,” referencing comments by then-Republican VP nominee JD Vance. Despite ongoing conflicts, Trump expressed goodwill toward Swift’s relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce.
Whether the White House intended its post as a nod to Swift or a play on American historical eras, the Trump-Swift feud endures. Two years after Trump’s declaration of hate for Swift, their dynamic remains prominent.
