In a 2010 interview, Bobby Pulido, a renowned Tejano singer and current Democratic congressional candidate, revealed that he hasn’t shopped for himself since becoming a music star. During his college years, Pulido occasionally visited supermarkets. However, since the start of his career 15 years ago, his trips to the store have become rare.
Now, running for a congressional seat in one of the nation’s competitive districts, Pulido’s background contrasts with the Democratic focus on affordability. The party aims to leverage concerns about inflation and high gas prices in their 2026 midterm strategy.
Known for hits like “Desvelado” and “Se Murió de Amor,” Pulido boasts five Latin Grammy nominations, with wins for Best Tejano Album in 2022 and 2025. Despite controversies, his campaign emphasizes economic challenges neglected by the current administration.
Pulido’s campaign underscores his view that the economy affects people directly, not just through stock market data. His focus is on daily essentials like groceries and healthcare expenses.
Recent Bureau of Labor Statistics reports show inflation rising to 4.2% in May from 3.8% in April. Pulido argues that these price hikes disproportionately impact his district, claimed to have the lowest per-capita income in Texas. “Inflation hits us harder,” Pulido explained in a podcast, noting the economic struggles in the Rio Grande Valley.
He aims to unseat Rep. Monica De La Cruz in the upcoming election. Pulido’s campaign represents one of the Democrats’ major chances in Texas following redistricting efforts that threaten several Democratic seats.
In the last election, De La Cruz secured her position with a 57.1% to 42.9% margin against Democratic challenger Michelle Vallejo. Pulido, having cleared the Democratic primary, will challenge De La Cruz on November 3.
