Exploring ‘Power Ballad’: A Music Dramedy with Rudd and Jonas

The latest film from Lionsgate, titled “Power Ballad,” stars Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas under the direction of John Carney, known for his music-centric narratives. “Power Ballad” features Rudd as Rick Power, an American wedding singer in Ireland who once led a rock band. Now, Rick sings at weddings with his band, The Bride and Groove, having shifted from his rock star ambitions after marrying his Irish wife and having a daughter.

The plot thickens when at a wedding gig, Rick meets Danny Wilson, played by Nick Jonas. Danny, a former boy band member, struggles to succeed as a solo artist. A request from the groom leads to Danny joining Rick’s band for a song, which sparks an instant connection between the two musicians.

Both Rick and Danny navigate the challenge of accepting their faded fame. Their bond strengthens during a spontaneous jam session, where they exchange musical critiques. One of Rick’s pieces, “How to Write a Song Without You,” leaves a lasting impression on Danny.

Back in Los Angeles, Danny presents his work to his manager, Mac, portrayed by Jack Reynor. However, Mac finds the tracks unimpressive and threatens Danny’s plush lifestyle if he doesn’t deliver a hit. Weeks later, Rick hears his tune on the radio, now Danny’s chart-topping hit.

What follows is a dramatic battle as Rick seeks recognition for the song that reignites Danny’s career. This pursuit strains Rick’s professional and family life.

The film showcases the talents of both Rudd and Jonas. Beth Fallon portrays Rick’s daughter, Aja, providing a charm to the screen. John Carney’s film doesn’t match the emotional depth of “Once” or “Sing Street,” yet “Power Ballad” remains an enjoyable experience. Despite a somewhat wandering final act, Carney delivers a satisfying conclusion that earned applause from the audience.

In summary, “Power Ballad” blends humor with engaging music, ultimately entertaining viewers through the performances of Rudd and Jonas. The movie carries a rating of R due to language and some drug use and runs for 1 hour and 38 minutes.
