Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Senate Republicans after most voted in favor of a bill allocating billions to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The bill advanced in a 52-47 vote, with one Republican, Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, aligning with Democrats against it.
“Senate Republicans have made their priorities clear: prioritizing funds and power for Donald Trump without addressing costs for working families,” Schumer stated. He criticized the refusal to outlaw a $2 billion fund associated with Trump, labeled a ‘slush fund.’
The passage included $70 billion additional funding for entities Schumer referred to as Trump’s “personal police force.” Schumer lamented that Republicans ignored Democratic efforts to reduce expenses related to housing, healthcare, gasoline, and childcare.
Last month, the Justice Department commented on a settlement involving Trump and the IRS. Under the agreement, ‘The Anti-Weaponization Fund’ was created to address claims from those who suffered unjust actions. The fund is set to receive $1.776 billion. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche noted this fund is not operational, as no commissioners or claims have been established.
Schumer reiterated the perceived protection of Trump’s financial interests by Republicans while failing to aid working Americans. Votes revealed an agenda focused on Trump’s needs rather than those of struggling families, according to Schumer.
The bill still requires approval from the House of Representatives before potentially reaching President Trump. Alex Nitzberg contributed to this report for Fox News Digital.
