The arrival of the Tesla Model S marked a significant moment in the automotive industry. It emerged as a battery-electric vehicle capable of meeting most driver needs. Moreover, it combined functionality with style, unlike the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt. Over the years, Tesla improved the Model S through over-the-air updates. However, production of the Model S ended in May, after nearly 750,000 units. This is three times the total number of vehicles ever sold by Polestar.
To date, none of Polestar’s vehicles have had a moment akin to the Model S. The Polestar One is often regarded as its most attractive production car. The debut of the Polestar Precept concept car received high praise. The Polestar 5 closely resembles this concept in appearance.
Both the Polestar 5 and Tesla Model S are designed as grand performance vehicles. Each achieves this goal effectively. As the Model S exits production, the Polestar 5 prepares to begin.
Where the Model S excelled in computing, comfort, performance, and style, the Polestar 5 continues. It improves on areas where the Model S was less strong, such as ride quality. However, U.S. shoppers face a wait for its arrival. Polestar hints not at “if” but “when” the 5 will reach American shores. The automaker currently deals with U.S. tariffs, economic uncertainty, and hesitancy among electric vehicle buyers.
Elon Musk’s influence on Tesla sales is often discussed. Yet, there is less conversation about Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller. His advocacy for sustainable vehicles, from production to lifecycle, is notable. Like Musk, Lohscheller strongly believes in a zero-emissions future.
The introduction of the Polestar 5 represents a step towards maturity for the brand, reflecting Lohscheller’s bold vision. The vehicle combines excellent electric performance with overall quality. The car’s rear design impresses, reminiscent of Porsche’s style at the front. Inside, a simple yet premium design follows trends set by Swedish competitor Volvo, also adopted by Chinese automakers. Polestar achieves simplicity without straying into unnecessary tech complications seen in BMW’s iX3 attempt.
The Polestar 5 offers a superb driving experience, demonstrating power, throttle response, and handling. Whether on rural roads, urban environments, or highways, it performs well. A long test drive from Gothenburg, Sweden, to Copenhagen confirmed this. Additionally, the ride remains peaceful and comfortable, even over several hours.
Upon its U.S. arrival, the Polestar 5 will carry a high price tag, similar to the Model S. With the Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan and Model S stepping aside, only the Porsche Taycan stands as a true competitor.
