The festivities surrounding the 250th anniversary of the United States have become deeply intertwined with political tensions. Both red and blue states are reflecting on the country’s complex history while also highlighting their unique contributions.
In 2023, during his campaign, President Trump pledged a year-long celebration for the nation’s 250th birthday. Since taking office again, he has led events including a military parade, a UFC fight on the White House lawn, and recently, the commencement of the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C.
The fair, a 16-day event held on the National Mall, has faced criticism. Some accuse President Trump of politicizing the anniversary celebrations. Despite the controversies, state planners across the nation, often working with limited resources, have been preparing their own programs.
Celebrations will include festivals, parades, rodeos, and communal potlucks. These events are designed to honor local and state history. For states not among the original 13 colonies, the celebrations include examining their relationship to the events of 1776, despite current cultural tensions and historical debates.
President Trump’s emphasis on “patriotic” history adds to the partisan nature of the date 1776. However, some believe the 250th anniversary could mirror the spirit of the 1976 Bicentennial, bringing communities together despite national discord.
John Dichtl, president of the American Association for State and Local History, stated, “There’s a big wave coming, and it’s going to paint a really sharp contrast with the dysfunction in Washington.”
