Josh Turek, a Paralympic gold medalist and current state legislator, secured victory in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Iowa. According to The Associated Press, Turek defeated his progressive opponent, Zach Wahls, in a contest that highlighted the party’s anti-establishment sentiment.
Turek’s opponent, Zach Wahls, is also a state lawmaker who gained national attention in 2011 with a memorable speech at the Iowa Capitol advocating for his lesbian parents. Despite Wahls’ prominence, Turek’s appeal as a ‘prairie populist’ resonated more with voters. Turek describes himself as a candidate who can attract support from both independents and Republicans.
During a debate last month, Turek emphasized his ability to win, stating, “I outperformed the top of the ticket by Trump by 50 percent, more than any other Democrat in the state.” He aims to leverage this experience in the upcoming election against Representative Ashley Hinson, who represents the northwest area of Iowa.
The Senate Leadership Fund, the primary financial supporter for Senate Republicans, has already pledged at least $29 million for Hinson’s campaign, indicating heightened competition expected in this election compared to previous years.
Democrats in Iowa are growing more hopeful about their prospects, even though Republicans currently hold control over the state’s congressional delegation, governorship, and both legislative chambers.
