Colombia witnessed a significant political event as Abelardo de la Espriella, a pro-Donald Trump candidate, emerged victorious in the initial round of the presidential election. On Sunday, he secured nearly 44 percent of the vote, surpassing his opponent, left-leaning senator Iván Cepeda, who obtained just under 41 percent, as reported by Colombian media.
Due to neither candidate achieving the necessary 50 percent threshold, a runoff election is scheduled for June 21, where these contenders will face each other once again.
Iván Cepeda enjoys the support of Colombia’s current leftist president, Gustavo Petro. Petro has had frequent public disagreements with Trump, especially concerning the U.S. administration’s controversial operations targeting alleged drug boats, which have resulted in over 200 deaths.
Abelardo de la Espriella, who has a background in law but has never held office in Colombia, has positioned himself alongside other right-wing leaders in the region, such as Argentina’s Javier Milei and El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele. He presents himself as a Trump supporter and has promised enhanced cooperation with the United States alongside rigorous measures against organized crime.
The Trump administration perceived Latin America as within Washington’s sphere of influence and has demonstrated its military presence south of the U.S. border.
In an assertive move in January, U.S. forces intervened in Venezuela, apprehending then-leader Nicolás Maduro from Caracas and extraditing him to the United States for narco-trafficking charges. Furthermore, there have been close to nine months of U.S. airstrikes targeting suspected drug vessels in both the southern Caribbean and eastern Pacific.
In efforts to exert pressure, the U.S. has also strengthened its military activities surrounding Cuba, maintaining an oil blockade against its communist government while coordinating anti-drug operations with Ecuador.
The White House has initiated the ‘Shield of the Americas’, a collective of over a dozen center-right and hard-right leaders embracing Trump-like policies. This coalition aims to collaborate with Latin American and Caribbean nations to curb illegal immigration, tackle drug trafficking and resist external interference in the Western Hemisphere.
Further developments on this breaking story are anticipated.
