Much of the focus in California has been on the competitive race to succeed Gavin Newsom as governor. Voters will also select various statewide officeholders who will work alongside the new governor in Sacramento. Unlike the governor, these roles have specific responsibilities and, aside from the attorney general, seldom have significant public platforms. Nonetheless, these positions are crucial for state functions, such as managing public funds, ensuring government accountability, supervising elections, and addressing home insurance issues following major wildfires.
Attorney General
The attorney general serves as California’s chief law enforcement officer. This role has gained prominence during the Trump administration as California opposes federal policies.
State Treasurer
The state treasurer is responsible for managing the Pooled Money Investment Account, which involves investing state and local government funds. The treasurer also allocates state bond financing for projects tied to education, infrastructure, the environment, and affordable housing.
Secretary of State
The secretary of state is integral to administering statewide elections. This office provides information on ballot measures, statewide candidates, and monitors campaign financing and lobbying efforts. It also oversees business licensing and filings.
State Controller
The state controller is tasked with using audits and reports to ensure accountability among government entities and agencies.
Lieutenant Governor
If the governor cannot serve due to death, resignation, or removal, the lieutenant governor steps in. The lieutenant governor also participates in overseeing state colleges and universities.
Insurance Commissioner
This position regulates home, auto, and other types of insurance. Recently, the office has focused on handling issues related to fires and homeowner insurance.
Schools Superintendent
The schools superintendent manages the California Department of Education, providing guidance and partial oversight to local school districts. This role often involves advocacy on education matters.
