2026 NFL Draft: Carnell Tate Joins Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans surprised many during the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting Carnell Tate as the No. 4 overall pick on April 23, making him the first wide receiver off the board. While Tate’s selection was anticipated, the team choosing him was unexpected.

Carnell Tate spent three years at Ohio State without being the No. 1 receiver, leading most NFL analysts and reporters to believe he would be drafted as a team’s No. 2 receiver option. The expectation was for him to join the Washington Commanders at No. 7 overall, assisting Terry McLaurin and supporting quarterback Jayden Daniels. Other possibilities included the New York Giants and Kansas City Chiefs, where he would play as a No. 2 receiver behind Malik Nabers in New York or provide additional depth for Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City while not overburdening him with offensive responsibilities.

The Titans, however, defied predictions by drafting Tate. Their decision may have been influenced by their need to build around quarterback Cam Ward, drafted No. 1 overall in 2025. Ward has confidence in Tate’s ability to handle pressure and anticipates a productive season with one-on-one matchups. According to ESPN’s Turron Davenport, Ward expressed his belief that the Titans offer one of the best environments for Tate – allowing him to be coached effectively without stifling his personal style of play.

Notably, the Titans appointed Robert Saleh as head coach in January, primarily known for his defensive strategies. Additionally, they hired Brian Daboll, the former head coach of the Giants, as offensive coordinator. Though Daboll’s tenure with the Giants was unspectacular, he is credited with shaping Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen, having served as their offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021. During his time with the Bills, acquiring wide receiver Stefon Diggs from Minnesota proved crucial in developing Allen’s potential. The Titans seem to hope Tate will play a similar role in nurturing Ward’s talent.
