Wisconsin state Representative Francesca Hong, who is currently leading the Democratic gubernatorial primary, is facing criticism for past social media posts criticizing popular American holidays. Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, stated in a November 2020 post that the United States should “cancel Thanksgiving” because it celebrates colonialism. She referred to it as the “original superspreader event” that harmed Indigenous communities. Hong later clarified her comment, describing Thanksgiving as her “favorite holiday.”
Aside from Thanksgiving, Hong also shared opinions on other celebrations. On Valentine’s Day 2022, Hong expressed her disdain for working in restaurants on the holiday, describing it as a commercialization of love, ignoring the labor behind service work. Her previous comments also include disapproval of Halloween and fireworks during Independence Day celebrations. In 2019, she spoke against Halloween, claiming she would prefer not to work during the holiday weekend. She also voiced displeasure at fireworks on Independence Day in 2020 and 2019, questioning why there wasn’t a curfew for fireworks.
These comments have sparked debates and critiques from both conservative and liberal commentators. Conservative voices have labeled her critical perspective as “grinchmaxxing,” suggesting a dislike for holidays. Republican commentator Steve Guest remarked that, if Hong’s goal was to oppose traditional institutions, her actions aligned perfectly with that objective.
Hong’s stance on Christmas drew less consistent criticism. Though some pointed to her post feeling “attacked” by a Christmas tree computer background, she has also posted in favor of the holiday, contradicting the notion that she opposes it entirely.
While these opinions attract criticism, figures like Val Thomason from Las Vegas see Hong’s character as unique, finding her aversion to holidays relatable. Despite requests for comment, Hong’s campaign has not responded to the recent scrutiny.
