White Sox to Host Unique Pope Hat Giveaway

White Sox to Host Unique Pope Hat Giveaway

During a previous event at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV was seen wearing a Chicago White Sox cap. Now, a new promotion at Rate Field will reflect this connection. On August 11, during the game against the Cincinnati Reds, every attendee will receive a White Sox version of the pope’s ceremonial hat. Known as a ‘mitre,’ this gesture was initially planned as a limited-ticket giveaway for 1,500 spectators. However, within 24 hours of the announcement, interest surged.

Mike Downey, the senior director of marketing and fan promotions for the White Sox, stated, It was a way for us to test the waters, and we tripled that number in ticket sales. Due to the overwhelming response, the promotion expanded to include all fans, totaling over 40,000 pope hats in the stadium.

The inspiration for this promotion began last year with the announcement of the new pope. Born Robert Francis Prevost, Pope Leo is a native of Chicago and an avid White Sox fan. Downey noted that no other major league baseball team had attempted a pope-themed event because a United States pope hadn’t existed before.

Ideas were initially rejected, such as creating a pope bobblehead. Attempts to get official approval for using the pope’s likeness went unanswered by the Vatican. Downey explained, I’m sure he has more important and pressing things than to answer our email.

Fans began showing up in homemade pope outfits, inspiring the team to shift focus. Father Tom Hurley, a local priest in Chicago, advised Downey that creating a traditional-style hat would be appropriate. Downey ensured that the design maintained respect for Catholic traditions. The hat is simply shaped, without the pope’s name or image.

Finding a producer for the hats posed challenges due to their unique design. Downey reported difficulties in locating a vendor capable of custom assembly. Toby Ramos, senior director of design, highlighted the pressure on the company to ensure quality production. Ultimately, the White Sox partnered with Cotopaxi, who adjusted to the sizeable order effortlessly.

The decision to maintain quality was intentional, focusing on creating a meaningful item. Downey commented that promotional products typically have high perceived value and are an integral aspect of fan experience.

The team has not been in formal contact with the Vatican regarding the hats, although Downey hopes Pope Leo XIV is aware of the promotion. The hats are being distributed to players, team employees, associates, and even members of the Cincinnati Reds.

Downey emphasizes the cultural significance of this event, celebrating Chicago’s connection to Pope Leo. He noted, Picture 40,000 people rocking a pope hat, celebrating Pope Leo. The hats are anticipated to arrive a week before the game, ensuring readiness. With confidence, Downey stated, We have the pope on our side.
