The series between the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians remained tight. Each of their first five meetings this season ended with a one-run difference. This pattern continued Saturday at Progressive Field as the Sox won 3-1 in front of a crowd of 31,727.
Montgomery’s Impactful Performance
Colson Montgomery celebrated his one-year anniversary in the big leagues by hitting a decisive solo home run in the eighth inning. This broke the tie, and the Sox added another run in the ninth to seal the victory.
“This whole series has felt like a playoff series,” Montgomery said. “But then I look at the calendar and we are not even past All-Star break yet. It’s a good learning experience for down the road.”
Vargas Shines on All-Star Day
Miguel Vargas, who made the All-Star team for the first time, contributed with an RBI and a run. This performance helped the Sox (46-42) tie with the Guardians (47-43) for first place in the American League Central.
Burke’s Steady Pitching
Sean Burke, who didn’t earn the decision, pitched six innings, allowing one run on seven hits with no walks. He achieved a career-high 11 strikeouts.
“I didn’t know it was that many (strikeouts),” Burke stated. “(It’s) getting back to being simple and attacking the zone, getting the two-strike counts. See some of the chase and guys get in between and take some stuff in zone. Putting them on their heels and getting them in bad counts, it will be easier to rack those up.”
The Sox gave Burke a one-run lead in the first when Vargas walked and scored on Montgomery’s double. The Guardians evened the score with an Austin Hedges home run in the fifth. Despite pressures, Burke managed to control the inning and finish strong.
Relief Pitching Secures the Win
Brandon Eisert and Grant Taylor provided effective relief, closing out the game. Eisert pitched two perfect innings and earned the victory. Taylor added a save, striking out one in the ninth.
“Both really good,” Venable said. “First of all, Eisert was amazing. To get two innings from him there, and quality innings, was huge. We were really, really thin in the pen tonight. It was kind of his job to step up tonight, and he did in a big way.”
The victory was crucial after the Sox suffered two consecutive walk-off losses. Burke noted the team’s resilience.
“We keep playing well, they keep playing well, it’s going to be a race down to the wire,” Burke acknowledged. “It’s good for us after losing two heartbreakers to get in here and pull out one late.”
