Wedding Reception Tipping: What Guests Need to Know

Attending a wedding can be a joyous occasion, but questions about tipping etiquette often arise. While a typical night out might involve a gratuity of 15% to 20%, weddings operate differently. Understanding whether you need cash to tip at a wedding can prevent awkward moments.

According to national catering guidelines from WeddingWire, couples are advised to prepay a 15% to 20% gratuity to food and beverage vendors if it’s not already included in their venue contract. This pre-arranged fee usually relieves guests from having to pay out of pocket.

“As a guest at a wedding or any formal occasion, expecting someone to pull out cash or a credit card is not polite,” said Diane Gottsman, founder of the Protocol School of Texas.

Hosts typically choose between an open bar, where they cover all drink costs, and a cash bar, where guests buy their drinks. An open bar, where gratuity is included, is generally favored.

Conversely, a cash bar helps couples save money by not paying for liquor. Sometimes, a partial open bar is offered, covering beer and wine but not liquor. In this scenario, guests may need to tip for liquor purchases.

Gottsman emphasizes that a tip jar doesn’t belong at an open bar reception, as it pressures guests to second-guess the hosts’ hospitality. It is considered inappropriate to have a tip jar and ask guests to pay for drinks, which makes them feel like customers rather than invited guests.

Still, keeping some cash for peripheral services like valet might be wise. Even when gratuities are covered, extra tips could be appreciated for special services.

Effective communication is key in preventing guest confusion. Couples should inform guests about the type of bar service in advance, possibly on the wedding website.

“Clear expectations allow guests to come prepared,” Gottsman advises. “Typically, valet, coat check, and bar setup are included, with no extra tip needed unless specified.”
