Washington High School Lacrosse Player Dies After Tragic Field Incident

A high school lacrosse player from Washington tragically died after an unintended incident on the field. Eliot Abramson, a 17-year-old midfielder of Mercer Island High School near Seattle, was participating in a college recruitment event on June 1 when the event occurred.

Abramson, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, had been a part of the Mercer Island lacrosse community since elementary school. During the game, he was struck by a fast-moving lacrosse ball at the base of his neck.

The ball slipped beneath the back of his helmet during the play. Witnesses observed as Abramson immediately lost consciousness and collapsed on the field. He was quickly transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, undergoing emergency surgery before spending almost a week in intensive care. School officials and his family confirmed his death on June 7.

His mother, Jessica Abramson-Lott, honored him on social media, expressing comfort in the thought that Eliot is reunited with his biological father, Josef Abramson, who passed away when Eliot was just three years old.

“While Eliot’s time on earth concluded too soon, we take comfort in knowing he is with his dad, bringing joy, playing music, and lighting up spaces with his smile,” she wrote. “We are sure he’ll be doing ‘wall ball’ in the sky and supporting all his friends.”

Remarkably, this incident marks the second occurrence in a year where a high school athlete lost their life under similar conditions. Last year, 16-year-old lacrosse player Dylan Veselic from Ohio passed away after an equivalent injury.
