Virginia Democrat Representative Suhas Subramanyam has expressed concerns over FBI and Justice Department monitoring of his phone calls. According to Subramanyam, federal agencies informed him about the surveillance of conversations with Virginia state Senator Louise Lucas, part of a corruption investigation targeting Lucas.
Subramanyam, a freshman congressman and former state senator, criticized the Trump administration’s Department of Justice as being biased. He labeled the timing of the wiretap as suspicious, coinciding with the voting on a new Democratic congressional map and subsequent legal ruling.
Official documents revealed government monitored calls between March 6 and April 5, and April 14 and May 14. Virginia approved the congressional map on April 21, only for the state’s Supreme Court to block it on May 8.
The FBI has not commented on these allegations, while the Justice Department has yet to respond to requests for a statement.
