Victor Wembanyama’s Controversial Play in NBA Finals Game 3: Reactions and Fallout

In Game 3 of the NBA Finals, San Antonio Spurs’ center Victor Wembanyama faced criticism for a controversial play against New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson during the first half. The play unfolded as the Knicks were executing their offense, with both players entangled in a struggle. Wembanyama appeared to be attempting to maneuver through a screen or fend off Brunson, who was holding onto his jersey. A replay of the incident revealed Wembanyama delivering a hard shove to the back of Brunson’s head and neck, nearly sending the Knicks guard to the ground.

Brunson responded quickly, confronting Wembanyama, who seemed to dismiss it with laughter. The referees did not call any foul or review the play for a flagrant violation, allowing the game to proceed. Despite the controversy, the Spurs secured a hard-fought victory at Madison Square Garden with a score of 115-111.

The incident generated significant criticism from analysts, including former Knicks star Stephon Marbury. Marbury suggested that strong action should be taken against Wembanyama. In a video rant that surfaced on social media following Game 3, Marbury labeled Wembanyama’s play as “dirty” and encouraged the Knicks to respond assertively.

“Wemby is an international player. They play dirty overseas. We’re not used to playing dirty in America like the way Wemby just threw Jalen Brunson,” Marbury commented. He further advised a physical response, suggesting that if he were in the game, he would target Wembanyama’s rib cage with his elbow.

Brunson’s teammate, Jose Alvarado, issued a warning for Game 4, and various analysts have recommended that the Knicks retaliate in the upcoming matchup.

Stephon Marbury, who played for the Knicks from 2004 to 2009, is among the former players supporting the team throughout their 2026 playoff run. Others include Patrick Ewing, John Starks, and Walt “Clyde” Frazier. Among them, Frazier is the sole player to have won a championship. He was with the Knicks from 1967 to 1977, bringing home the franchise’s only two titles in 1970 and 1973.

Marbury’s passionate advice to the Knicks comes at a tense time. Hostile fans made headlines with confrontations involving Spurs’ jersey bearers following Game 3.

Game 4 between the Knicks and the Spurs is scheduled to take place at 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday evening.
