Verónica García’s Path to Track Stardom Amidst Adversity

Verónica García, a senior at East Valley High School, has risen to prominence in the world of track and field. Her journey has not been without challenges. Living in Spokane Valley, Washington, she has faced significant obstacles, including poverty, on her way to becoming a high school track champion—once achieving the feat twice.

Her story is remarkable not only for her achievements on the track but for the struggles she has overcome. On the morning of her first race of the season, Verónica awoke with familiar discomfort. She describes waking up on the floor, battling a persistent headache and a stomach knotted from hunger. The night prior, she had hoped to fuel up with Olive Garden breadsticks, a dream that her family’s financial situation could not support.

Instead of a lavish meal, Verónica prepared the only option available—a quarter-pack of plain spaghetti, devoid of sauce. This humble meal highlights the reality of her circumstances. Despite these challenges, Verónica’s determination and resilience have been unwavering, leading her to success on the track and recognition—though sometimes for unexpected reasons.
